Due to the high cost of antiretroviral medications, people living with HIV are generally deemed medically inadmissible if they apply to immigrate to Canada. This increase to the cost threshold may mean that many people living with HIV will no longer be found medically inadmissible and excluded from immigration to Canada. We welcome this change. However, HALCO, the Legal Network, and many other disability and migrants rights organizations have long been calling for a full repeal of the medical inadmissibility regime. The Standing Committee agreed with our recommendation and called for the government to repeal the provision. But what is truly needed is a full repeal of the deeply flawed and discriminatory excessive demand regime. As the Minister himself said, this regime does not reflect Canadian values. It must end. It aims to collect and keep up to date information on national and state level laws criminalising the transmission of or exposure to HIV. Please use the contact us form.

There has been an enormous groundswell of public condemnation after reports emerged recently that hook-up app Grindr has been sharing data on the HIV status of its users to two external analytics companies it was working with. That CDC report set in motion a series of events that led to the identification of a new retrovirus in and its naming, three years later, as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus HIV.
Since then — and thanks to pressure from activists — medical research on HIV and AIDS has passed several milestones, from the development of successful antiretroviral treatments in to the more recent introduction of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis PrEP , which research now shows can successfully prevent HIV infection.

Ontario is now providing access to a new HIV treatment as diagnosis rates in the province continue to rise. Because Biktarvy has so few side effects, patients tend to remain on their medication for longer periods. In the past, single daily pill treatments contained boosters to enhance the HIV treatment, which made many patients ill. Daniel has been on HIV treatments for the past decade which had a history of making him ill, but has been on Biktarvy for the past year without side effects.

As technology improves, the window periods associated with HIV tests get shorter and it’s important to counsel patients appropriately about the best time to test for HIV. Diagnosing HIV as soon as possible after infection means individuals can be advised on how to prevent transmission when their viral load is high. Balancing these priorities can be challenging for clinicians and difficult for individuals to understand.
The Table of Probabilities tool was designed to give the probability of a false negative test result if a patient has HIV. This information may help clinicians and individuals decide the best time to test for HIV. The tool should be used when an individual can give an approximate date of when they were potentially exposed to HIV. It is not useful for people who have condomless sex or regularly engage in other activities that have a higher chance of HIV transmission.
More information can be found about the development of the tool here. HIV testing in British Columbia usually starts with a 4th generation test that looks for both HIV antibodies and antigen the p24 antigen in the blood. If this test is reactive, additional confirmatory testing is done.

“I’m 24, a Gemini and Casually Dating—Oh, and I’m HIV-Positive”
Although research has extensively documented the experiences of illness of people living with HIV, dating, marriage, and fatherhood among heterosexual Latino men has not been examined. To address this gap, this study used a qualitative study design to examine patterns and strategies for dating, marriage, and parenthood among 24 HIV-positive heterosexual Puerto Rican men living in Boston.
The findings in our study indicate that an HIV diagnosis does not necessarily deter men from having an active sexual life, marrying, or having children. In fact, for some of the men, engaging in these social and life-changing events is part of moving on and normalizing life with HIV; these men planned for, achieved, and interpreted these events in the context of establishing normalcy with HIV. Although the HIV diagnosis discouraged some men from engaging in sexual relations, getting married, or having children, others fulfilled these desires with strategies aimed to reconciling their HIV status in their personal life, including dating or marrying HIV-positive women only.

TORONTO — While working as a sexual health educator in Calgary several years ago, artist and activist Mikiki would often gently correct clients who said they had never met a gay person. Actually, you probably have but just didn’t know it, Mikiki would explain. Do they feel comfortable to come out to you about their HIV status? Probably not. The restaurant is named after the late June Callwood, one of the hospital’s founders, who was inspired to provide comfort and empathy to young men dying of AIDS after her year-old son Casey was killed by a drunk driver.
June’s is billed as Canada’s first HIV-positive restaurant and was launched to help dispel outdated myths. The idea came after a recent study found that half of Canadians said they wouldn’t knowingly eat or share food prepared by someone who is HIV-positive. Many incorrectly believed HIV could be transmitted through skin-to-skin touch, saliva, or by sharing glasses or cutlery.
Matt Basile, chef at Toronto’s Fidel Gastro, came on board to train the cooks and help them develop the menu. The experience level in the kitchen ranges “from the good to the bad to the ugly,” says Guy Bethell, one of the chefs on the crew, who has been living with HIV for 30 years. But everybody had something to bring to the table, and Matt was able to pull threads from all of us.
June’s quickly sold out its two-night run and organizers hope to hold similar events in the future.
